Starting the story:
In 1970, a San Jose State alumni, U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson established the first annual Earth Day.
San Jose State founded the Environmental Resource Commission that same year and hosted an event the students called the “Survival Faire”.
An inspired class of art students under the direction of ___- prof thought, ‘what can we do to make a point about environmentalism during the Survival Faire?’
What they decided to do was to buy a new dodge muscle car, then bury it.
This would symbolize the end of the fossil fuel industry and gasoline motors.
Students raised enough money to buy a ___ and never even started the vehicle.
They pushed it, marching from from the dealership in a dramatic funeral procession, led by two ministers and___ all the way to the center of campus, around where the Cesar Chavez arch is today.
There, students performed a ritual burial.
The Environmental Resource Commission hosted that survival faire and that tradition has gone on today, with Earth Day becoming the main holiday to celebrate sustainability.
Sustainability is a cause worthy of standing up for, as our campus has realized for 46 years now.
What does it mean to be sustainable?
Definition including responsible future for our children, and then definition with 3 e’s.
Mary Papazian, the new president of SJSU said that she holds sustainability as one of her core values.
Her insistence was that SJSU become a leader in the community and that we as a college in the center of the city, and that the city itself should begin adopting long-term, ambitious sustainability goals.
At a previous university she worked at (look up if it was her latest one, southern), Papazian was ?given awards?, mentioned in her local newsletters as making a sustainability of department(name)
The future the nature that surrounds us depends on the actions of a large group of humans .
The best way to reach the people is through thoughtful innovation.
What better place than to foster the mindset of the future than the Capital of Silicon Valley.
The University is in the center of the Valley of the Heart’s Delight, a land renowned for its bounty and temperate climate.
Michael Fallon at the CCCAC is even spearheading an effort to make the Santa Clara Valley into a National Historic Area.
FD&O is also a leader in innovation.
Mention the water plant and how we were (one of?) the first customers to use recycled water en masse.
We use it for lawns, toilets, ?? anything else? ask debbie about central plant cooling water
Describe the water saved here
Talk about other FD&O accomplishments, such as the cogeneration installation, the LEED certifications.
The curriculum is a major step for us too.
Currently SJSU offers __courses in _majors and according to Katherine Cushing.
She is also working hard to create a CSU-wide sustainability minor.
She is the former leader of the sustainability department, which wasn’t funded under former president, mo, but cushing has high hopes that papazian will provide staff and support to form a team of sustainability people.
This is very likely since she has at her last ______ schools.
Programs implemented by cushing include green together)?? check and the one that …
Librarain Peggy Cabrera and two other teachers has created an interactive, online module that is taught in west valley, de anza, and sjsu that allow students to learn about sustainability in our library and in our plant.
The vision of sustainability began with the hippie movement. The names it has gone by have been “environmentalism,” “survival,” “green,” and now, the latest, “sustainability.” Current interest in sustainability is becoming more and more prevalent. “69% of college applicants this year say having information about a college's commitment to environmental issues would contribute to their decision to apply to or attend the school.” SJSU has long been a proponent of sustainable life. With their recent report, SJSU received a gold STARS rating. STARS is the sustainability tracking and rating assessment system, designed to see how “green” a school is and is becoming. XXX
